The Philadelphia Phillies have shown that incompetence has reached new levels. The Phillies placed their best player, Chase Utley, on the disabled list today. He is expected to be out two – four weeks with a strained oblique. So, who do the Phillies pick?
Let's pretend there was a major league player who has a career batting average of .188 who was disposed of and sent to AAA for good. His batting average in AAA was .226. That is somebody that we would never see ever again, right?
Despite the fact the Phillies have two competent fill-ins on their major league roster in Kevin Frandsen and Freddy Galvis, the Phillies felt the need to bring to the major leagues a poor-hitting, poor-defense, all-in-all miserable player to replace Chase Utley.
Here is a list of Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs that I would take before Michael Martinez:
- Darin Ruf
- Josh Fields
- Cesar Hernandez
- Pete Orr
- Cody Asche
- Cody Overbeck
- Andres Blanco
- Leandro Castro
- Jermaine Mitchell
- Steve Susdorf
- Joe Savery as a hitter
Yes, even Phillies now-and-then reliever Joe Savery has a higher batting average lifetime in AAA. In 2010, Savery hit .348 in 58 at bats. Then he went back to pitching. But this season in games that Savery was going to pitch, he batted twice before entering the game. In the one game, he hit a double.
But the Phillies settle for one of the biggest jokes to enter the major leagues in my lifetime. Worse than John Bowker, worse than Felipe Crespo, worse than Ezequiel Carrera. Mark it down: if Michael Martinez has one at bat for this big league club this season, I will cancel my season tickets.
The Phillies are about to begin a stretch where they will need a DH for six games out of their next 10. If now isn't the time to give Darin Ruf some at-bats, when is there?
This is a clear message to fans: the Phillies have given up on 2013. I'm sure glad I wasted all my money to watch this crap.
