It's a fairly big news day for former Philadelphia athletes from the Newport News, Virginia area.
This morning, former Philadelphia 76ers star Allen Iverson was named as an inductee to the 2016 Basketball Hall of Fame class.
Iverson, who was a star quarterback in high school, isn't as famous for playing quarterback as Michael Vick, who also made news this morning.
The former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, who will be 36 before next season, told the Newport News Daily Press that he would like to play one more season.
“I’m 35, about to turn 36,” said Vick, who plans to join Taylor at Tech’s spring game April 23. “I’ve got one more dedicated season in my blood, if somebody needs me to come in. But I’m kind of happy where I am right now. …
“I’ve got my health, I’ve got my kids, I’ve got my family. The game has done so much for me in terms of relationships, opportunities to take care of myself and my family. I’m just thankful. I give all the credit to God.”
While this headline would suggest that Vick really would like to play another season, he's probably aware that it's more likely that not that he won't be in the league next season. Vick didn't sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers until training camp, but he did play in parts of five games due to injuries to starter Ben Roethlisberger. As has been a theme in his career, Vick did end up getting injured, suffering a hamstring injury in mid-October. This came after Vick was very ineffective during the 2014 season with the New York Jets.
Vick spent five seasons of his career in Philadelphia, serving as a starter for parts of those four seasons. Though Vick will be remembered by many as an Atlanta Falcon, the best individual season he had in his career came in 2010, when he lead the Eagles to a divisional title and finished second in league MVP voting.
