Mickey Morandini joins Phillies big league coaching staff

The Phillies completed their coaching staff on Monday with the hiring of an organization staple.  Mickey Morandini, who played second base for the Phillies from 1990 through 1997 and once again in 2000 will be returning to the big league club as a coach.  Morandini will serve as the Phillies first base and baserunning coach.

The Phillies announced the move:

Morandini has been on the Phillies' radar for some time.

Morandini has served as a manager at short season Williamsport and Class A Lakewood, before joining the AAA IronPigs staff.   After being named bench coach in 2015, Morandini ended up filling in for hitting coach Frank Cacciatore at AA Reading.  Morandini ended up staying with the Phillies' AA club through the end of the season, in which the team made the finals.

Morandini should put on his familiar number 12 jersey, vacated by John Mizerock, whose contract was not renewed.  Morandini was a candidate for the assistant hitting coach job that Mizerock filled the last two seasons, but remained as a coach in the minor leagues.
