Per Todd Zolecki of MLB.com the Phillies have announced the latest round of cuts. Most surprising (or maybe not surprising) is Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez who after Cliff Lee went down, seemed almost a lock for the roster. However Gonzalez has really struggled this spring a 7.53 ERA, allowing 25 hits in 14.1 innings. It just hasn't really worked out as of yet for Gonzalez and we're left to wonder if it ever will.
This would appear to practically lock up Kevin Slowey for the 5th starter job but while it seems Severino Gonzalez or Aaron Nola are out of the question, they did impress last week. Personally I'm leaning in the direction that the 5th starter is currently in some other club's camp. Slowey hasn't really impressed either lately and the Phillies don't have much of a history of promoting prospects this early. I would be shocked if Ruben Amaro Jr. doesn't sign someone up off the cutting room floor this week.
Other cuts are pitchers Hector Nerris and Paul Clemens, infielders Chris McGuiness and Chris Nelson, and catcher Koyie Hill. That seems to land Cameron Rupp with the back up job and rightfully so. Rupp has had a really nice spring.
Phillies are back at it at 1:05 this afternoon against Detroit. It's Anibal Sanchez vs. Aaron Harang.
