The Phillies updated their roster today on their website to reflect some uniform numbers. I suppose the team wanted to give fans a jump on their Christmas shopping. Order your Miguel Gonzalez jersey now!
- Justin De Fratus will take number 30, worn by Rich Dubee the last nine seasons. No Phillies player has worn number 30 since Cory Lidle. De Fratus wore number 37 but gave it up when the tenured Antonio Bastardo had to pick a new number after Jonathan Papelbon signed with the team. De Fratus then took number 79 (by choice, he told me. Getting the big-league reliever number is a sign the Phillies consider him part of the future.
- Miguel Gonzalez will wear number 75. This is not a minor league assignment; Gonzalez wore number 75 in Cuba, so it was likely his choice.
- Pete Mackanin will wear number 45. This was Mackanin's first uniform number with the Phillies back in 2009. He gave it to Pedro Martinez mid-season. He wore 22 and then 5 before his year away from the Phillies. Both of those are currently taken.
- Larry Bowa gets his familiar number 10.
h/t to Tyler for noticing this.
