Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout, who will probably not end up playing for the Philadelphia Phillies, is the Philadelphia Eagles most famous fan not named Bradley Cooper. Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz even handed a football to Trout after a touchdown in the team's Week 17 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
New Jersey governor Chris Christie, who claims to root for the New York Mets and Dallas Cowboys, used his time on a New York sports radio show earlier this week to take a shot at Phillies fans:
"The Phillies suck," Christie said. "Let's just start with that. They're from Philadelphia. They're an awful team. They're an angry, bitter fan base and it's not safe for civilized people to go to Citizens Bank Park if you want to root for the other team.”
Trout, who is from Millville, N.J., was asked about Christie's comments in a press conference Saturday, and though he didn't specifically defend Phillies fans, he defended Eagles fans, many of whom also root for the baseball team that plays across the street:
"As an Eagles fan, we're passionate about the team and we want them to win and to do good," Trout said. "In sports in general, [Phillies fans] love their teams." [via Jerry Crasnick of ESPN]
Trout also jokingly took a swipe at the Cowboys:
"I think he's a Cowboys fan, right?" Trout said of Christie. "I was sorry to hear that."
