Minor League Report: Time for Prospect Playoff Runs

By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor

It’s April and playoff time is in full swing for some of the Flyers prospects.

For several players in juniors and college, it’s been a successful postseason so far with only more to come.

Here is the latest Minor League Report.

AHL

The Phantoms playoff push hits a crucial stage, with just six games remaining on the regular season, including three big games on home ice this week.

The Phantoms had an interesting weekend, playing their final 3-in-3 of the season. Our Phantoms beat writer Tommy Hendricks broke down all the action from this weekend on Monday night.

ECHL

With the Flyers playoff hopes dashed on Sunday and the Phantoms still looking to lock down their spot, the Reading Royals are playoff bound.

With their 5-3 win over Wheeling on Sunday, the Royals punched their ticket to the playoffs. Mark Dekanich got the win in goal for Reading, making 32 saves.

The Royals have three games remaining in the regular season and sit in fourth place in the North Division, trailing second place by just two points. Adirondack surged to the North lead, holding a five-point advantage on the Royals and a three-point advantage on second-place Brampton.

Juniors/College

Carter Hart – Hart and the Everett Silvertips closed out a 4-2 series win over the Victoria Royals in the first round of the WHL Playoffs in dramatic fashion. Hart had already posted a 25-save shutout in Game 3 of the series and Everett won Game 5 in overtime.

Hart stopped 64 of 66 shots in the longest WHL game in history, lasting 151:36:00. In the fifth overtime, Everett scored to claim the series and Hart took home the victory in goal.

Hart has played well all season and continued that with a 1.58 GAA and .938 save percentage in the series.

Philippe Myers – The Flyers prospect defenseman and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, the defending champions of the QMJHL, finished off their series against the Halifax Mooseheads on Monday night with a 5-2 win. Myers had a goal and an assist in the deciding game of the series and finished the six-game series with two goals and five assists for seven points.

Myers had 35 points in 34 games in the regular season, including 10 goals.

The series almost went the wrong way for Rouyn-Noranda. In Game 5, with the series tied at two, the Huskies trailed 5-3 in the final minutes of regulation. Myers assisted on a goal by Jeremy Lauzon to cut the lead to one with 2:07 to play. Mathieu Boucher tied the game with 20 seconds left in regulation. The Huskies won the game on Gabriel Fontaine's goal in triple overtime.

Oskar Lindblom – Lindblom was the standout forward for Brynas IF in the SHL this season and continues to be solid in the playoffs. Brynas advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-2 series win over Linkoping HC. In the series, Lindblom had one goal and four assists for five points, including a goal in the deciding Game 6. While Lindblom was held scoreless in Game 1 of the semi-final series against Frolunda, Brynas took a 1-0 series lead on Sunday.

Felix Sandstrom – Sandstrom didn't see action in Brynas' series against Linkoping except for 12 minutes at the end of Game 2. But getting the start in Game 1 against Frolunda, Sandstrom made it count. The prospect goalie made 34 saves on 37 shots in a 4-3 win, including one right along the goal line as time expired to secure the win.

Merrick Madsen – It will be a big weekend for Harvard goalie and Flyers prospect Merrick Madsen. Harvard is one of four teams remaining in the NCAA Frozen Four. They will face Minnesota-Duluth in the National Semi-final on Thursday. If they win, the National Championship game will be on Saturday against the winner of Notre Dame-Denver.

Madsen was the Most Valuable Player for the ECAC Tournament and made 27 saves in Harvard’s win over Air Force to advance to the Frozen Four.

German Rubtsov – Despite his hot start at the QMJHL, Rubtsov has dealt with injury of late, and that has held him out of action since March 4. Rubtsov had nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points in 16 games. Rubtsov’s team, the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, advanced to the second round of the QMJHL Playoffs by sweeping Victoriaville. Fellow Flyers prospect Pascal Laberge scored two goals for Victoriaville in the series loss.
