The Lehigh Valley Phantoms closed out the regular season with a pair of games over the weekend that held very little meaning. Earlier in the week, the Phantoms had locked up the Atlantic Division title and were simply awaiting their opponent.
The Phantoms still scored a pair of wins against Bridgeport and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to finish the season with a 47-19-5-5 record.
Forward Phil Varone led the team with 70 points in 74 games and was named the AHL MVP. Greg Carey led the team with 31 goals.
It took until Sunday afternoon for the Phantoms to learn their first-round opponent and schedule. The Phantoms will face the Providence Bruins in the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.
The series will begin with two games in Providence on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21 — both at 7 p.m. The series then shifts to Lehigh Valley the following weekend. Game 3 would be on Friday, April 27. Game 4 would be Saturday, April 28 and Game 5 would be Monday, April 30. Both games are if necessary in the best-of-five series.
As the higher seed, the Phantoms had the choice to start the series on the road or host the first two games of the season and opted for two road games in the series first.
