MLB All-Star Game: Herrera flies out, National League falls

Final: American League 4, National League 2

SAN DIEGO — Beautiful Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, hosted the 87th annual Major League Baseball All-Star Game about as well as possible. The weather was, well, San Diego weather. The field looked about as nice as any baseball field you'll ever see. And the pre-game ceremonies featured a special announcements that the National League and American League hitting champion awards would be named after Hall of Famers Rod Carew and Tony Gwynn.

The game itself was a closely played contest as well, with the American League ultimately holding on for a 4-2 win that they hope will propel them to a second consecutive World Series title in October.

Game Summary

  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
NL 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 10 1
AL 0 3 1 0 0 0 0 0 X 4 8 1

Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs got the National League on the board early, hitting a first inning home run that got out of the park in a hurry.

From there, the American League went on an offensive run, scoring three runs in the second inning on home runs by Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez, both of the Kansas City Royals. Hosmer added another RBI in the fourth, singling home Edwin Encarnacion of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Marcell Ozuna of the Miami Marlins cut the American League lead to just two in the fourth, as he singled home Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants to make it a 4-2 game.

The American League bullpen, capped off by performances by Will Harris (Houston Astros) and Zach Britton (Baltimore Orioles), shut the National League down for the rest of the game, stranding 11 runners and clinching home field advantage in the World Series.

Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera, the lone All-Star for the Phillies, went 0-1 in his one at-bat, flying out to center field. Former Phillies' ace Cole Hamels, playing in his first All-Star Game with the American League, wasn't particularly effective in his inning of work, but didn't allow a run.

Chris Sale 1.0 1 1 1 0 1 1 9.00

Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox started for the American League, going just one inning. In his inning of work, the Southpaw allowed just one hit. Unfortunately for him, that one hit was a home run by Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs.

Johnny Cueto of the San Francisco Giants pitched a scoreless first inning, but didn't make National League manager Terry Collins (New York Mets) look good for sending him back out in the second inning. In the inning, Cueto allowed home runs to Kansas City Royals teammates Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez, giving up three runs and being lifted before the end of the inning.
