BATON ROUGE, La. — Even though Philadelphia Phillies RHP Aaron Nola has been sidelined for the remainder of the 2016 season due to a UCL sprain and a low-grade flexor sprain, he is still making an impact within the Major League Baseball community, only in a charitable way.
Major League Baseball and its players association have announced that they will jointly contribute $250,000 to Louisiana flood victims, which will be distributed among three charitable organizations: the American Red Cross ($125,000), the Baton Rouge Area Foundation ($62,500) and High Socks for Hope ($62,500), according to a press release.
Nola, a Baton Rouge native, along with eight other Louisiana State University alumni — Alex Bregman and Will Harris (HOU), Louis Coleman (LAD), Kevin Gausman (BAL), DJ LeMahieu (COL), Mikie Mahtook (TBR), Anthony Ranaudo (CWS) and Ryan Schimpf (SDP) — have been active through establishing the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to raise awareness and funds as part of the recovery efforts for the victims.
The August 12-22 Louisiana flooding, labeled by the Red Cross as the worst natural disaster in the United States since Hurricane Sandy, killed 13 people and put thousands into emergency shelters with most without power.
The Louisiana Flood Relief Fund will directly benefit from the foundation's $62,500 contribution.
"During this dire time of need in Louisiana, we hope that our joint contribution will help those impacted by this natural disaster to receive the emergency support they now require," said MLB Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr.
Other players that have raised awareness are Reid Brignac of the Atlanta Braves and Wade LeBlanc of the Seattle Mariners.
