Morgan struggles against Teheran, Braves in series finale

Final: Braves 6, Phillies 2

WP: Julio Teheran (7-6, 4.59 ERA) LP: Adam Morgan (2-3, 4.46 ERA)

Philadelphia, PA – This afternoon in the series finale with the Atlanta Braves, rookie s0uthpaw Adam Morgan surrendered four runs on seven hits and three walks in just five innings on the mound, as the Phillies came up short in sweeping their divisional rival.

First baseman Ryan Howard extended his hitting streak to eight games this afternoon. Howard batted .571 against the Braves this series, 8-14, with three consecutive multi-hit games to his credit.

A win today would have given Philadelphia their first four-game home sweep of the Braves since September of 1949, when they faced the Boston Braves at Shibe Park.

The Phillies will have off tomorrow to begin preparations for the homecoming of shortstop Jimmy Rollins, with the Los Angeles Dodgers, on Tuesday.

The only run scored in the first four frames today occurred in the bottom of the second inning, when left fielder Cody Asche hit a RBI-single to right field, his 20th of the season.

While Morgan worked through four scoreless innings heading into the top of the fifth, his luck soon changed. With two outs and center fielder Cameron Maybin on first, Morgan was called for a balk, the first of his career over seven starts.

Third baseman Chris Johnson followed with a RBI-single. Later in the inning, second baseman Jace Peterson hit a three-run blast to right field, his fourth, to put the Braves on top, 4-1. During the next half-inning, in the bottom of the fifth, Philadelphia answered with a RBI double by Odubel Herrera to pull within two runs.

Atlanta added two insurance runs a couple of innings later, in the top of the seventh, to go on top, 6-2. These runs were scored from RBI-singles by left fielder Jonny Gomes and catcher Ryan Lavarnway.

Philadelphia failed to put up a significant rally late in the contest.
