Nope, you didn't miss anything. It's the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida, and one would think the Phillies would be doing something to get better. Nope. At least there was no real news today on the Phillies front.
Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. did come up with this good quote, though. The Phillies are in the market from pitching, but Amaro seemed to indicate that they do not need anyone, such as free agent starter Matt Garza:
"It's amazing," Amaro said. "We talked about it this morning. He has 64 wins. Do you know how many wins Garza has? Sixty-seven."
Amaro added: "He's benefited from some run support and defense. But wins are wins."
Sigh.
Some things did happen today around baseball, including:
- The Mets signed 40 year-old Bartolo Colon to a two-year contract. That is kind of risky, considering his age. If Colon is supposed to make up for Matt Harvey being out for the season, odds are not in his favor that he won't succumb to an injury.
- Utility player Jerry Hairston, Jr. has retired and will work in the Dodgers broadcast booth.
- The Blue Jays signed Toma Okha to a minor league deal. Yeah, he's still around
Tomorrow is the last day of the 2013 Winter Meetings. Will the Phillies do anything? We shall see. What is clear though, is, the Phillies are pretty much the same as last year plus Marlon Byrd.
Thanks to @Phylan for helping me learn that wonderful quote.
