Final: Reds 5, Phillies 2
PHILADELPHIA — All you need to know about the Phillies' latest loss is this: Reds right-hander Tim Adleman came into Friday night's series opener at Citizens Bank Park with an earned run average at 6.19, and left the game with an ERA of 4.95.
Adleman baffled the Phils' struggling offense all game, allowing just one hit in eight innings of the win.
Aaron Nola allowed three runs in the first two innings and two more in the sixth frame. That was more than enough insurance for Adleman, who shut down the Phillies' lineup as the Reds took the first game of this weekend's series, 5-2.

Speedster Billy Hamilton worked a walk in the first, stole second and third, and scored on Joey Votto's RBI groundout to open the game's scoring in the first. The next hitter, Adam Duvall, smoked a solo homer to deep left as the Reds plated two in the first frame. Scott Schebler added to Cincinnati's lead with a solo blast in the second inning.
From the double play Adelman forced to end the first inning to the walk Andrés Blanco drew in the bottom of the seventh, no Phillie reached base. Adelman set down 16 straight batters, keeping the Phillies at bay all night.
José Peraza snuck a single through the 5.5 hole, between shortstop Freddy Galvis and third baseman Maikel Franco, with runners on second and third to plate two more runs in the sixth inning. It ended Nola's night at six innings as the right-hander sat, dejected, in the dugout.
Mark Leiter, Jr. pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth for the Phils. Joely Rodríguez hurled a clean ninth.
For Cincinnati, Asher Wojciechowski pitched the ninth in place of Adleman. He allowed the Phils' second hit of the game: a double from Odúbel Herrera. Blanco walked and Altherr drove home Herrera. A surprising error from Votto at first allowed for another run on a fielder's choice, but Maikel Franco, representing the tying run, struck out to end the game.
For the Phillies, it's almost imperative that they find success against aging right-hander Bronson Arroyo tomorrow. Arroyo will match up with righty Jerad Eickhoff, who is still looking for his first win of the year.
