Before today's Phillies win against Detroit in Lakeland, Ryan Lawrence of PhillyVoice.com reported that although Odubel Herrera has been out since March 12th, the center fielder was planning to return to action this week.
“I’m feeling good – it’s just a small injury,” said Herrera, who is hitting .391 (9-for-23) with three doubles in seven games this spring. “I’m just waiting.”
But for how long?
“Two more days,” said Herrera through a translator.
That may not happen after Pete Mackanin's comments following today's game. According to Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Daily News, the Phillies skipper is concerned about Herrera's finger injury and he will be re-evaluated on Tuesday. Phillies.com's Todd Zolecki reiterated Mackanin's comments, but said that Herrera's finger 'could be' reexamined and that he hasn't progressed as quickly as Mackanin originally thought.
Herrera injured his finger back on March 12th sliding into home and hasn't played since. With the Phillies thin outfield already without Aaron Altherr and Cody Asche, a more serious injury to Herrera's finger would make things much worse. The Phillies have been going with an outfield combination that includes David Lough, Tyler Goeddel and Cedric Hunter in recent games with Goeddel a near-lock to make the team. Either Lough or Hunter would likely make the team as a fourth outfielder, but if Herrera misses more time, both of them could find themselves on the roster come Opening Day.
