Stutzle Strikes for OT Winner, Senators Down Flyers
The late-season success continued for the Flyers for most of Sunday. They were going toe-to-toe with a playoff opponent, albeit one that was resting a few players in the process.
The Flyers got the game to overtime, but an early penalty set up the eventual game-winning goal, as Tim Stutzle scored his second of the game at 1:40 of overtime to seal a 4-3 Flyers loss to the Ottawa Senators.
Both teams were held off the board in the first, as the Flyers carried an 8-6 lead in shots through 20 minutes.
The Flyers finally opened the scoring at 11:43 of the second. A point shot by Cam York left a rebound for Nic Deslauriers to clean up for his second goal of the season.
Just 53 seconds later, the Senators tied the game back up as Stutzle flew past Egor Zamula and beat Ivan Fedotov for his 22nd goal of the season.
With 2:43 remaining in the period, Noah Cates put the Flyers back in front with his 16th goal of the season, banking in a wrap around off a defenseman to make it 2-1.
Through two periods, shots were 22-15 Flyers.
Ottawa tied the game at 4:41 of the third, as Fabian Zetterlund ripped one from the slot for his 19th goal of the season.
The Flyers answered back to take the lead back at 7:33. Garnet Hathaway fired a rising shot that beat Anton Forsberg to make it 3-2 with his 10th goal of the season.
The Senators evened things up at three again at 12:54. Thomas Chabot fired a shot past Fedotov, who had lost his stick, for his eighth goal of the season.
Just 19 seconds into overtime, Travis Sanheim was called for interference. During the power play for Ottawa, Nick Seeler was stung by a blocked shot, Cates lost his stick, and the Senators controlled things from there. Finally, with 39 seconds remaining on the power play, Stutzle finished things off with a one-timer from Drake Batherson for his second goal of the game.
Forsberg made 29 saves on 32 shots in the win. Fedotov made 21 saves on 25 shots in the loss.
Hathaway had a goal and an assist for the Flyers. Stutzle and Chabot each had three points for Ottawa.
The Flyers return home for their final game on home ice this season on Tuesday night. They take on the Columbus Blue Jackets at 7 p.m.
