PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - MARCH 13: Owen Tippett #74 of the Philadelphia Flyers scores a goal during the fifth round of the shootout against Jonas Johansson #31 of the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Wells Fargo Center on March 13, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This goal would be the game-winner as the Flyers defeated the Lightning 4-3.

The Flyers found themselves in rare position through two periods. They carried a lead into the final 20 minutes. The game was tied less than four minutes into the game, but that didn’t derail the Flyers.

The five-game losing streak is over after a 4-3 shootout win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night at Wells Fargo Center.

The Lightning took advantage of an early power play to get the lead. At 8:29, Gage Goncalves was on the receiving end of a backdoor pass from Yanni Gourde for his fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0.

The Flyers tied the game at 14:20. Bobby Brink finished off the rush with a rising shot to beat Jonas Johansson and make it 1-1. It was Brink’s ninth goal of the season.

Through 20 minutes, shots were 9-7 Flyers.

The Lightning took the lead back just 15 seconds into the second period. Zemgus Girgensons scored on a rebound for his second goal of the season to make it 2-1.

The Flyers answered back at 10:55 of the period. Brink scored his second of the game and 10th of the season on a backhand, speeding past the Tampa defense to even things at two.

In the final minute of the second, the Flyers took the lead. Ryan Poehling scored his fifth goal of the season, waiting out Johansson to make it 3-2.

Through two periods, shots were 17-14 Flyers.

Just 3:50 into the third, the Lightning tied the game back up. Cam Atkinson fired one home from the slot for his fourth goal of the season to make it 3-3.

That eventually forced overtime and a shootout. In the second round of the shootout, Matvei Michkov and Brayden Point traded goals. Owen Tippett scored in the fifth round and Oliver Bjorkstrand was stopped at the other end by Sam Ersson to secure the win.

Ersson made 17 saves on 20 shots in the win. Johansson made 26 saves on 29 shots in the loss.

Brink had a three-point game, while Poehling and Olle Lycksell each had two points.

The Flyers close out a seven-game homestand on Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m.
