Phillies Select 4 Pitchers, 4 Position Players in Day 2 of MLB Draft

The Philadelphia Phillies added eight more prospects to their farm system on Tuesday in Rounds 3-10 of the 2019 MLB Draft, selecting one first baseman, one third baseman, one left-handed pitcher, two shortstops, and three right-handed pitchers.

Round 3, 91st Overall: SS Jamari Baylor, Benedictine College Prep (VA)

Baylor, who recently spent time hitting and fielding at Citizens Bank Park before the draft, is excited to join the Phillies organization; he said he will sign as soon as possible and will report to Clearwater, Florida.

Round 4, 120th Overall: LHP Erik Miller, Stanford

Miller ranked No. 61 on MLB Pipeline's Top 200 prospects list. In March, Miller was named the Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week after setting a career high in pitches (101), while tying a career high in strikeouts (9) and season high in innings pitched (6); he surrendered just one hit in the 9-0 win over No. 18-ranked Texas.

Round 5, 150th Overall: RHP Gunner Mayer, San Joaquin Delta College (CA)

Round 6, 180th Overall: RHP Andrew Schultz, Tennessee (TN)

According to GoVols247's Wes Rucker, Schultz can throw "a lot of 96-101 mph fastballs covering the entire area in/around the plate and batter’s box."

Round 7, 210th Overall: RHP Brett Schulze, Minnesota (MN)

In May, Golden Gopher Baseball's website wrote that Schulze, a starter-turned-reliever, "performed a record-setting stretch of  708 days without a loss, going 15-0 in a span of 45 appearances out of the Gopher bullpen."

"Even as a starter, you can pitch really well and not be labeled with the win. That's kind of what it is: a label," Schulze said. "There's times where I definitely deserved it, and times when it was just happenstance. I have relatively little control over when that happens."

Round 8, 240th Overall: SS Nate Fassnacht, George Washington University (DC)

Fassnacht was recently named Atlantic10Conference Player of the Year, as being the A-10 leader in runs (59), and RBI (60), also ranking second in hits (88), doubles (23), and slugging percentage (.652).

Round 9, 270th Overall: 1B Rudy Rott, Ohio University (OH)

Rott was recently named Mid-American Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive season; he is the first two-time winner in conference history.

Round 10, 300th Overall: 3B McCarthy Tatum, Fresno State (CA)

Tatum was recently honored with All-American honors by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Having started in all 53 games for his team, Tatum hit .353 with 28 extra-base htis and led the Mountain West (MW) in slugging percentage (.601) and RBI (71), the latter of which ranked 11th nationally in that category. Also, Tatum's 12 home runs and 77 hits ranked second- and third-best respectively in the MW.

The Phillies did not have a second-round pick on Monday, as it was forfeited when they signed Bryce Harper this past offseason. Still, good talent can be found in later rounds, as the club recently did with Adam Morgan, Cameron Rupp, Vance Worley and J.A. Happ in the third round, along with Rhys Hoskins, Ryan Howard and Cole Irvin in the fifth round, notes NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Coincidentally, Harper has a unique connection with the Phillies' first round selection made 14th overall earlier in the evening, fellow Las Vegas, Nevada, native SS Bryson Stott.

Rounds 11 through 40 will take place starting Wednesday at noon.
