Having won four of their last six games — with a plus-13 run differential, 10 home runs and 21 extra-base hits — the Philadelphia Phillies (78-73) will begin a crucial, eight-game road trip Thursday evening, starting with a four-game set against the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves (84-68) at SunTrust Park. Right-handers Vince Velasquez and Kevin Gausman will square off.
The Phillies won back-to-back series — for the first time since their first two series after the All-Star break — in their 4-0 victory Wednesday evening against the New York Mets. Rhys Hoskins' first inning home run was the 50th of his career, making him the second-fastest Phillie to reach the milestone (192 games) — bested only by Ryan Howard (182) — and the seventh-fastest all-time, per Elias. Odubel Herrera launched his 22nd home run in the fourth, while Jose Bautista hit a RBI double in the fifth. Carlos Santana walked for multiple times for his third straight game. Starter Zach Eflin tossed five scoreless frames while punching out a career-tying-best nine batters, matched two other times at home this season: May 7 against the San Francisco Giants, and June 10 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Phillies are in the midst of consecutive four-game road series for the first time since July 2010 — away against the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals — and a 17-game stretch to end the season with no off days since 2000. A Phillies win in Thursday's opener would put them 4 1/2 games back in both the National League East and Wild Card postseason races, with 10 games remaining.
