Phillies, Velasquez Seek 70th Win in Interleague Finale

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

Behind RHP Vince Velasquez, the Philadelphia Phillies (69-60) will look to salvage the series finale and capture their 70th win, as they take on the Toronto Blue Jays (60-69) and 11-year veteran RHP Marco Estrada Sunday afternoon at the Rogers Centre.

Saturday Recap: Phillies Blow 5-0 Lead, Lose 3rd Straight Series

The Phillies have cut their 2018 season win pace by three games — 90 to 87 — since the All-Star break, standing at two games under .500 in 34 second-half games. The Phillies are 11-8 against American League opponents this season, and with a win on Sunday in their season interleague finale, it would set a franchise single-season high for interleague wins (12).

Game Notes:

Standings

  • The Atlanta Braves have lost two straight to the National League East-worst Miami Marlins, outscored, 4-1. Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies and Milwaukee Brewers are in a three-way tie for the second National League Wild Card spot. The Phillies trail the division by three games and the Wild Card by two with 33 games remaining in the season.
  • Phillies speedy outfielder Roman Quinn has a five-game hitting streak since last Sunday, slashing .563/.588/.813 with three runs scored, seven singles, one double, one home run, four RBI, one walk, three strikeouts and one stolen base. Quinn is out of the finale's starting lineup with a tweaked left hamstring. Catcher Jorge Alfaro has produced a .318/.348/.455 slash over his current six-game hitting streak.
  • Prior to Saturday, infielder Asdrubal Cabrera slashed just .189/.232/.322 with 23 strikeouts in 24 games and 95 plate appearances with the Phillies since joining them from the New York Mets via trade in late July. Cabrera went 3-5 with a double and two runs scored in Saturday's loss, however, hopefully marking the start of a hot streak for the 12-year veteran.
  • This season, the Phillies have fallen in four of five games against the Blue Jays, outscored 24-18. Since June 14, 2016, the Phillies have also dropped seven of their last eight games against their American League East foe, outscored 55-25, and outhit 77-60.

VsTOR

  • Phillies first baseman Carlos Santana is 6-14 with a double and two solo home runs in his career against Estrada (.429/.429/.929), while catcher Wilson Ramos is 4-10 with a home run, two RBI, walk and strikeout (.400/.455/.700). Blue Jays outfielder Curtis Granderson is hitless in 12 career plate appearances opposite Velasquez with a RBI, two walks and three strikeouts (.000/.250/.000).

CareerVS

  • Santana currently has the third-most walks in the majors (91), trailing only Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielder Mike Trout (100) and Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper (92).
