PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Losing their first game in over a week Monday afternoon, the Philadelphia Phillies (10-4-2) will look to rebound as they head south to Charlotte Sports Park to oppose four-year veteran southpaw Drew Smyly and the Tampa Bay Rays (6-8).

Starting Pitching Matchup:

Philadelphia Phillies (10-4-2) Tampa Bay Rays (6-8)
RHP Aaron Nola LHP Drew Smyly
(0-1, 11.57 ERA) (2-0, 0.00 ERA)

Nola, 22, has struggled in two starts thus far this spring, allowing a combined six earned runs, three home runs, eight hits and two walks in just 4 2/3 innings. Smyly, 26, on the other hand has shown promise for manager Kevin Cash and the Rays. In 5 1/3 combined innings against the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates, the left-hander has yet to surrender a run.

Smyly has one career appearance against the Phillies. Facing left fielder Steve Susdorf, followed by pinch-hitters John McDonald and Michael Martinez at Comerica Park on July 28, 2013, he threw one perfect inning in relief on 15 pitches, while striking out McDonald on six pitches.

Game Notes:

  • Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco leads all of baseball in spring training home runs (6) and runs-batted-in (14). Franco sits this afternoon after hitting two home runs against the Orioles on Monday.
  • Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff is expected to make his spring debut home against the Rays on Thursday. Eickhoff had been sidelined with a small fracture in his right thumb suffered during a bunting drill nearly three weeks ago. Throwing in a minor-league game on Saturday, March 12, he exited early with a blister on his right foot.
  • Catcher Carlos Ruiz has left the Phillies to play for his native team, Panama, in the World Baseball Classic qualifier.
  • Closer hopeful David Hernandez (right triceps tendinitis) will throw for the first time since March 1 this afternoon in a minor league game, according to Ryan Lawrence. Right-hander Jimmy Cordero (sore biceps), acquired in the July 31, 2015, Ben Revere trade to the Toronto Blue Jays, will also pitch in minor league action for his spring debut.
  • Phillies Rule 5 selection, outfielder Tyler Goeddel, will face his former organization for the first time. Non-roster invitee catcher J.P. Arencibia played in 24 games with the Rays last season.
