PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired switch-hitting utility man Ty Kelly from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations. The acquisition comes just one day after the 28-year-old was designated for assignment.
Injured veteran RHP Clay Buchholz (torn right flexor tendon) was moved to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Kelly on the 40-man roster.
Last season with the New York Mets, Kelly hit .241/.352/.345 with one double, one triple, one home run, seven RBIs and 11 walks over 39 games and 71 plate appearances. In the short-term, Kelly can help fill the void left by injured 2B/OF Howie Kendrick (oblique), who has no clear timetable for his return.
The Dallas, Texas native was drafted in the 13th round of the 2009 amateur draft by the Baltimore Orioles. The Phillies will be Kelly's sixth organization he has played for, joining the Orioles, Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals, Blue Jays and Mets.
