With every addition comes subtraction. The Philadelphia Phillies did just that prior to their Saturday evening game against the San Diego Padres, when adding newly-acquired first baseman Justin Bour to their 25-man roster.
While most fans expected Scott Kingery to be the odd man out — given J.P. Crawford's activation from the disabled list (fractured left hand) on Friday, the recent acquisition of veteran Asdrubal Cabrera from the New York Mets, and third baseman Maikel Franco's recent consistent production — the Phillies ultimately opted to send down starting RHP Zach Eflin, according to The Athletic's Matt Gelb.
Eflin's demotion is not a reflection of his recent play, but rather simply "serious roster manipulation," as Gelb notes. Eflin will make his next turn in the rotation, as scheduled, during the club's Thursday single-admission doubleheader against the New York Mets as the 26th man. A roster "subtraction," in essence, would not need to be made until the right-hander's following expected start on August 22. Eflin yielded just two runs on five hits, one walk and eight strikeouts spanning six innings and 90 pitches in the Phillies' 2-0 shutout loss against the Padres on Friday.
Eflin will lose approximately $20,000 and nine days of big-league service time for the move, per Gelb.
Bour will wear No. 33 with the Phillies, last worn by RHP Drew Hutchison this season, and southpaw Cliff Lee in 2011-2014. Bour will bring left-handed offensive power off the bench, given he slugged for 19 home runs and 54 RBI in 112 games with the lowly Miami Marlins this season.
The Phillies bench now consists of Crawford, Bour, Kingery, outfielder Roman Quinn and backup catcher Andrew Knapp. Two-time All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos is expected to makes his Phillies debut later this month, as he is currently recovering from a hamstring ailment.
