Shortly after selecting pitcher Connor Seabold in round three, the Philadelphia Phillies continued to draft college prospects, adding third baseman Jake Scheiner in the fourth round, 113th overall.
Scheiner played at Santa Rosa Junior College before transferring to University of Houston for the 2017 season. In 63 games, he hit .346 with 18 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs, 64 RBIs, 27 walks and 41 strikeouts. His performance during the 2017 season at Houston earned him a handful of honors, including Baseball America Third Team All-Amercan, Collegiate Baseball Second Team All-American and First Team The American Conference.
In the fifth round, the Phillies dipped into the high school prospect pool for the first time during the draft, picking Locust Grove High School left-hander Ethan Lindow. The 18-year-old Georgia native has committed to play at UAB, but is likely to sign with the Phillies given the round he was picked in on Tuesday. The approximate value of that slot is $353.4K according to MLB.com’s draft tracker.
In 2016, Lindow was named the 4A Player of the Year, Co-Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-State honoree while leading his team to a state championship. He boasted a 10-1 record with 85 strikeouts over 59.1 innings to go along with a 0.47 ERA
