PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies have added Dominican southpaw Elniery Garcia to their 40-man roster, according to Antonio Puesán of ESPN Deportes.
Garcia, 21, was 12-4 with a 2.68 ERA and 91 strikeouts through 117 2/3 innings last season with the High-A Clearwater Threshers. His win total and ERA ranked a respective second (three-way tie) and fourth-best in the Florida State League, spanning 20 games and 19 starts.
The 40-man roster addition came just hours after veteran southpaw Matt Harrison was released by the organization after reaching an insurance settlement, according to Matt Gelb. Harrison, who was acquired July 2015 from the Texas Rangers in the Cole Hamels trade, missed all of the 2016 season with a back injury.
Garcia's addition to the roster was done to protect him from being selected in next month's Rule 5 draft. The 40-man roster now stands at 33, with at least six more prospects expected to be protected by this Friday's deadline, per Gelb: Nick Williams, Dylan Cozens, Andrew Knapp, Ben Lively, Nick Pivetta and Mark Appel.
