Phillies Add Pitcher Kevin Munson, Lose Hunter Pence Acquisition To Mets

The Phillies added one, lost one in this morning's Major League Rule 5 Draft.

The Phillies added pitcher Kevin Munson from the Arizona Diamondbacks reports many in the draft room, including the Delaware County Times' Dennis Deitch.   Munson was a college closer when he was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2010 draft.   He throws 95 miles per hour and has had the extra experience of two Arizona Fall League appearances.    In the minor leagues in 2013 Munson went 2-4 with a 4.12 ERA in 53 total games between AA Mobile and AAA Reno.

Check out this video about Munson from the time he was drafted:

Like we have seen with David Herndon and Michael Martinez in recent time, Munson must remain on the Phillies' roster all season, or else he must be offered back to the Diamondbacks.

The Phillies lost right-handed pitcher Seth Rosin to the New York Mets.   Rosin was one of the three players acquired by the Phillies from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for outfielder Hunter Pence.   Rosin went 9-6 with a 4.33 at AA Reading last season.   Of course, the Phillies could get him back if he does not make the Mets roster contiually throughout next season.   Rosin may not be ready for a full season in the big leagues.  However, with the Hunter Pence trade a touchy subject with many, this stings a bit.

The Phillies did not take a selection in the minor league portion of the draft.   However, the Red Sox took shortstop Jonathan Roof from the Phillies.   Roof is a shortstop who played for the Clearwater Threshers last year.   Roof did not hit much in 2013.
