Didn't we go through this just a couple years ago? This year, it sounds like the possibilties of Michael Young coming to the Phillies might be much better.
Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News says that the Phillies and the Rangers are in "advanced" talks in a trade that would send the Rangers' utility player to the Phillies.
According to three major league sources, the Rangers were in advanced talks with Philadelphia about a deal for the 36-year-old Young that would include the Rangers eating more than half of his remaining $16 million in salary. The Rangers would likely receive a young major league reliever along with a lower-level prospect.
The prospect of a "young major league reliever" kind of scares me. If the reliever is not named Aumont or DeFratus, I could deal with it. If it is Stutes, I would swallow hard and just deal with it; if it is Diekman, Schwimer, or Horst, I'll be okay.
Presumably, Young would play third base. Young came up to the major leagues as a shortstop, but moved to third base for Elvis Andrus. After moving to third base, the Rangers signed Adrian Beltre and Young was forced to move again. Since the Beltre signing, Young has seen time at first base, second base, third base, and shortstop while serving frequently as the team's designated hitter. With talented minor leaguers Mike Olt and Jurrickson Profar on the horizon, Young's role on the Texas Rangers is unclear.
In 2012 playing all five of those positions, Young played in 156 games and batted .277, but his OPS was a medicore .682.
