Phillies’ bats silenced as Jacob deGrom, Mets win home opener

Final: Mets 2, Phillies 0

WP: Jacob deGrom (1-1, 1.46 ERA) LP: Aaron Harang (1-1, 0.73 ERA) SV: Jeurys Familia (2)

Flushing, NY- Under brilliant, sunny skies at the Mets' home opener at Citi Field, the Phillies offense struggled once again, as they were shut out 2-0 in the first of a three game set.

The first three innings of today's game featured just four combined base runners for both clubs, two of them being singles from Phillies' shortstop Freddy Galvis and Mets' third baseman David Wright.

In the top of the fourth, the Phillies reached base twice the amount they had done in the previous three frames. Two singles from center fielder Odubel Herrera and first baseman Ryan Howard went all for naught however, as the offense was not able to manufacture their first run since the bottom of the seventh inning in Sunday afternoon's game against the Washington Nationals.

As it turns out, the Phillies weren't able to put together a run in any inning of today's matchup between right handers Aaron Harang of the Phillies, and Jacob deGrom of the Mets. New York took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the fourth, thanks to a RBI-single from center fielder Juan Lagares, scoring Daniel Murphy on third base.

An insurance run was able to be tacked-on in the bottom of the eighth for the Mets, largely because of a fielding error committed by Phillies' second baseman Chase Utley, his first of the season. Left fielder Michael Cuddyer, who singled earlier in the inning, was able to advance to third base as a result. Catcher Travis d'Arnaud followed with a sacrifice fly to left fielder Ben Revere, increasing his team's lead to 2-0.

The Phillies' offense had seven hits, two walks, and left 14 men on base while striking out five times.

Galvis continues to be one of the lone bright spots for the team batting-wise, as he went 3-3 today to increase his already-impressive batting average to (.400).
