Phillies bats silenced by Morton, Astros

Final: Houston Astros 5, Philadelphia Phillies 0  ❖  Attendance: 17,176

PHILADELPHIA — Coming into tonight's game, the Philadelphia Phillies (34-64) were looking to tie up the series against the Houston Astros (67-33). That didn't happen. The Astros secured a series victory with their win against the Phils. Starter Nick Pivetta was having a solid outing until the sixth inning, in which he allowed four runs. Overall, he threw six innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out seven. Luis Garcia and Hector Neris combined for three scoreless innings in relief of Pivetta.

The Phillies' bats were quiet tonight. All four of the hits that the offense mustered were doubles, including two by catcher Cameron Rupp. The team failed to take advantage of those opportunities, as they were 0-10 with runners in scoring position tonight. The Phils struck out 12 times, which is unacceptable.

WP: Charlie Morton (8-4, 3.83 ERA)  ❖  LP: Nick Pivetta (3-6, 5.73 ERA)

The Astros' bats struck first. Third baseman Alex Bregman led off the third inning with a triple into right-center field. Norichika Aoki followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Bregman and give the Astros the lead. Phils starter Nick Pivetta was able to retire the next two batters on ground outs to end the frame. It's important to note that Bregman was removed from the game after this inning with an injured leg.

Both pitchers were on a roll until the top of the sixth. With one out, Astros second baseman Jose Altuve extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a double to right field. He moved up to third on a passed ball. Josh Reddick singled to left field to score Altuve and increase the Astros' lead. Yuli Gurriel followed with a single of his own to put runners on first and second with one out for Evan Gattis. He struck out for the second out of the inning. Just when it seemed that Pivetta would get out of the inning, Marwin Gonzalez stepped to the plate. He singled to center field to score Reddick to give the Astros a 3-0 lead. During the at-bat of Derek Fisher, Gurriel and Gonzalez completed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Fisher singled to right field to score both runners and increase the Astros' lead. He was thrown out trying to steal second for the final out. That was more than enough run support for the Astros pitching staff.
