Tonight the Phillies started a three game series against the New York Mets. After getting swept by the Blue Jays in a four game home and home series, the Phillies are looking to get back on the winning ways. Tonight, the Phillies sent Roberto Hernandez (2-1 4.50 ERA) to hill, who was coming off a career start against the Washington Nationals. The Mets sent Jenrry Mejia (3-0 5.23 ERA) to rubber to counter Hernandez. Mejia this season has struggled with command and going late into games.
The Game: The Mets struck first in the bottom of the first. With one out, Daniel Murphy and David Wright hit back-to-back singles. Then Curtis Granderson doubled down the right field line to score Murphy. 1-0 Mets
In the third inning, the Phillies tied the game. Chase Utley led off with his 13th double of the season. Howard then flew out, allowing Utley to move up to third. Marlon Byrd then walked to set up Domonic Brown who hit an rbi single to score Utley. 1-1 Tie
Chase Utley got it going in the fifth as well. Utley led off and was hit by a pitch. Then with two outs, Chase Utley stole second and Brown singled him in. 2-1 Phillies
After getting two quick outs in the eighth, Antonio Bastardo walked Daniel Murphy. David Wright then followed with a double to tie the game. 2-2 Tie
In the eleventh inning, with one out, Chase Utley hit his second double of the night. Ryan Howard was then intentionally walked. Marlon Byrd then hit a double down the right field line to score Utley. 3-2 Phillies
Jonathan Papelbon came in the eleventh inning to close out the game. He struck out David Wright for the first out. Then Curtis Granderson flew out first pitch to Marlon Byrd. And finally Chris Young flew out to center for the final out. 3-2 Phillies FINAL
Roberto Hernandez was in and out of trouble all night but battled allowing only one run in five innings. Other Phillies pitchers appearing in the game were: Jake Diekman, Mike Adams, Antonio Bastardo, Mario Hollands and Jonathan Papelbon.
The Impact: It was good to see Roberto Hernandez be able to get in and out of trouble in his five innings, but the bullpen blew another lead. Though it was very exciting to see the Phillies offense fight back in the eleventh inning.
Up Next: Tomorrow the Phillies will continue their series against the Mets sending Kyle Kendrick (0-3 3.58 ERA) to the hill. He will be opposed by Dillon Gee (3-1 2.51 ERA).
