Phillies beat up by Marlins, drop series

Final: Marlins 11, Phillies 1

MIAMI—Watching Wednesday's rubber match between the Phillies and the Miami Marlins, it was clear which team was the best-hitting club in the National League and which…well…was not.

The Marlins had no trouble driving in runs all day, recording 16 hits and scoring 11 times, while the Phillies managed to get runners on base but seemed perfectly content to leave them there, scoring just once and with two outs in the ninth inning.

The Phillies dropped two out of three at Marlins Park; they have gone 4-9 since the All-Star Break.

WP: Adam Conley (7-5, 3.38)  ❖  LP: Zach Eflin (3-4, 4.23)

Peter Bourjos robbed Ichiro of extra bases in the first inning Tuesday; Giancarlo Stanton returned the favor with a leaping catch against the wall to take away an extra-base hit from Tommy Joseph.

A double, single and forceout to start the bottom of the first plated the first Miami run; Stanton, not satisfied with having cost the Phillies a run, drove a long two-run homer off the wall in left as the Marlins began the game with a three-spot.

It was certainly a wake-up call for starter Zach Eflin, who hurled a complete-game shutout in his last start, against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Phillies loaded the bases in the third with one out thanks to singles from Eflin, César Hernández and Odubel Herrera (who bunted his way on). Maikel Franco's slow grounder forced out Eflin at home and Tommy Joseph popped out foul to end the threat.

Don Kelly hit his first triple of the game (yes, there were two) in the fourth, scoring on a sac fly from pitcher Adam Conley.

Conley was very effective in keeping runs off the board, although he allowed plenty of baserunners through his 6.2 innings. In the top of the sixth, the Phillies once again loaded the bases with one out, but Tyler Goeddel struck out and Taylor Featherston flied out to center.

Eflin ran into more trouble in the sixth. Kelly's second triple chased in Adeiny Hechavarria and Miguel Rojas, ending Eflin's day at five-plus innings.

While the Phils' starter's day was done, his line wasn't: Conley, facing reliever Andrew Bailey, picked up his second RBI with a soft single into left to score Kelly. Bailey proceeded to walk J. T. Realmuto and Martín Prado before being taken out for Brett Oberholtzer, who mopped up with a run-scoring double play and a strikeout to keep the Miami advantage at 8–0.

The Phillies chased Conley with two runners on and two out in the seventh, but reliever Nick Wittgren got Maikel Franco to pop out and once again keep the Phillies scoreless.

Oberholtzer allowed RBI doubles to Realmuto, Prado and Ozuna in the eighth, pushing the Marlins' lead to 11–0.

Dustin McGowan, the former Phillie, finished off the game. He allowed an RBI double to César with two outs in the ninth, bringing across the Phillies' only run.

The Phillies, hoping to rebound from losing two out of three to Miami, travel to Atlanta to start a four-game set with the last-place Braves. On Thursday, Aaron Nola will try to improve on his last start when he faces Matt Wisler.
