Philadelphia Phillies 2018 No. 3 overall pick Alec Bohm has been tearing it up through eight combined games — between the GCL Phillies West and the Williamsport Crosscutters — since making his professional debut on June 19.
Bohm, 21, needed just four games with the GCL Phillies West before earning his promotion to the short-season Crosscutters on June 24. Despite recording a school-record three grand slams, a 12-game hitting streak, 24 multiple-hit games, 13 multiple-RBI games and two multiple-home run games during his junior and final season at Wichita State, Phillies brass reportedly were not "unanimous" in selecting the Ohama, Nebraska native in this month's amateur draft, according to Fancred Sports' Jon Heyman.
Heyman writes:
"The Phillies love Alec Bohm, the Wichita State 3B who they signed for $5.95 million … But the call “wasn’t unanimous.” They also considered Oregon State SS Nick Madrigal, who went fourth, and University of Florida 3B Jonathan India who went No. 5. Everyone loves Madrigal but some see a 5-foot-7 player as a risk (though obviously Jose Altuve and Dustin Pedroia both became MVPs). Maybe they want to leave shortstop open in case they sign Manny Machado too? Machado has made clear he wants to play SS long-term …"
Bohm is slashing .308/.400/.385 thus far in his professional career, with one triple, two RBI, two walks and four runs scored in 30 plate appearances. Bohm is slashing .444/.545/.667 at home, but has just two hits over his last 14 at-bats.
