The Philadelphia Phillies have claimed 28-year-old outfielder Jordan Danks off of waivers from the Chicago White Sox, per CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury. He was designated for assignment back on January 8th to make room for Emilio Bonifacio on their 40-man roster.
Danks, drafted in the seventh round of the 2008 amateur draft, is a career .227 hitter in 180 games over three seasons. The left-handed hitter has filled the last remaining position on the Phillies' 40-man roster, according to The News Journal's Meghan Montemurro.
According to Salisbury, Danks could serve as a backup for the center field position. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says that Danks 'will be part of the outfield mix in Spring Training', as they look for athletes who can play defense. Danks has a minor-league option remaining, so the Phillies could stash him at AAA Lehigh Valley until they need a sub.
Currently, the team also has Rule-5 selection Odubel Herrera and Aaron Altherr to work with at the position, assuming Ben Revere will earn the starting role for his third year wearing red pinstripes.
Last season with Chicago, Danks hit .222 with two home runs and 10 runs-batted-in, appearing at the plate 132 times. He is the younger brother of once teammate and left-handed starting pitcher for the White Sox, John Danks, 29.
