Phillies Claim Trevor Kelley Off Waivers From Red Sox
By Paul Bowman, Sports Talk Philly Editor
The Phillies had an open spot on their 40-man roster for about two weeks, but they filled it on Monday.
Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports that the Phillies have claimed Trevor Kelley off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

Kelley is a reliever who throws in the high 80s with a bit of an odd delivery.

While he has stellar numbers in the minor leagues with a 2.37 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP he has struggled at the major league level.
Kelley had an outstanding year in AAA with the new “juiced” balls in 2019 holding a 1.79 ERA over 52 games.
Across 10 games at the Major League level in 2019, he carried a 8.64 ERA and allowed opposing batters to slash .290/.350/.613. His FIP suggests he pitched better than that, however not enough that he would have been a viable option at 6.69.
Kelley does have minor league options, so he may not be in Philadelphia to start the season.
Without a spot open on the 40-man roster, the Phillies may not plan to pick any players in this year’s Rule-5 Draft.
