Since the beginning of September the Phillies have been active claiming players. Thanks to 40-man roster spots opening due to injury, the Phillies have added relievers Juan Nicasio (since traded) and Kevin Siegrist. On Monday it was another injury and another reliever waiver claim for the Phillies, as they claimed left-handed pitcher Zac Curtis from the Seatttle Mariners and placed reliever Jesen Therrien on the 60-day disabled list.
Curtis has pitched for two teams in the major leagues up until now, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Seattle Mariners. Curtis was part of the five-player trade between the two clubs highlighted by shortstop Jean Segura for pitcher Taijuan Walker prior to the 2017 season. Though Curtis made 21 appearances for the Diamondbacks in 2016, he appeared in just three games for the Seattle Mariners.
In 2017, Curtis did not allow a run in four and two-thirds innings over those three games. Curtis spent most the season at Double-A, going 1-2 with a 3.51 earned run average. Curtis earned 13 saves in 17 chances for the Arkansas Travelers. Curtis was an All-Star in the Texas League.
Therrien flew back to Philadelphia after some concerns with his elbow developed. Therrien was near dominant in the minor leagues this season, going a combined 2-1 with a 1.41 earned run average between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. But Therrien struggled in the big leagues, compiling an 8.51 earned run average in 15 games and 18 1/3 innings.
Curtis was not on Seattle's active roster. Curtis was designated for assignment back on September 4. It appears that Curtis will join the Phillies.
