Some roster moves today as the Phillies welcomed back a few injured players. But there were some casualties:
According to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly, the Phillies made three cuts:
- Tony Gwynn, Jr. has been designated for assignment
- Cesar Hernandez has been optioned to AAA Lehigh Valley
- Koyie Hill has has been outrighted off of the 40-man roster
Somehow Andres Blanco still has a major league job.
Cliff Lee returns to start tonight. Wil Nieves will reappear on the major league roster this evening alongside Cameron Rupp. Finally, Reid Brignac has been activated to play infield, backing up three of the four infield positions.
It's a tough break for Tony Gwynn, Jr., who of course recently lost his father. I would believe that the Phillies would like to keep him at AAA Lehigh Valley, if he is willing to. Koyie Hill could opt out of his contract and sign elsewhere. Cesar Hernandez? He batted .348 in June, but just .067 in July. I guess they will get him regular at bats until someone is moved.
