Final: New York Mets 6, Philadelphia Phillies 3 ❖ Attendance: 19,617
Flushing, NY — The Philadelphia Phillies (53-86) came into tonight's game against the New York Mets (60-79) hoping to secure a series victory. That was not the case. Phils starter Nick Pivetta struggled through five innings, allowing six runs on ten hits and throwing 111 pitches. He had poor command and allowed runs in every inning other than the fourth.
The Phillies' bats didn't perk up until their final at-bat in the rain-shortened game. Nick Williams hit his ninth home-run of the season and Cesar Hernandez went 3-3.
With this win, the Mets have now won 18 of the last 21 series against the Phillies.

The Mets took an early lead in the ballgame. Jose Reyes led off the game with an infield single that was deflected by Phillies starter Nick Pivetta. He stole second during the at-bat of Norichika Aoki. Aoki grounded out to shortstop, with Reyes moving up to third. Asdrubal Cabrera singled to right to score Reyes and give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Travis d'Arnaud followed with a home-run that bounced off the top of the right field wall. Pivetta was able to retire Brandon Nimmo and Juan Lagares on a ground out and strike-out, respectively, to end the inning.
The Mets added on in the second inning. Dominic Smith led off the inning with a double to right field. After a strike-out by Matt Reynolds, starting pitcher Robert Gsellman singled to right field to score Smith. Reyes and Aoki were both retired for the second and third outs.
The Mets tacked on another in the third. Cabrera doubled for his second hit of the game. d'Arnaud moved him to third on a ground out to shortstop. Nimmo hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Cabrera. Lagares doubled to put yet another runner in scoring position for the Mets. Fortunately, Pivetta was able to strike out Smith to end the inning.
The Mets continued to score in the fifth inning. Aoki, Cabrera and d'Arnaud hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs for Nimmo. He hit his second sacrifice fly of the game to give the Mets a 6-0 lead. Lagares and Smith were retired on a fly out and a pop out, respectively, to get Pivetta out of the jam.
The Phillies got one back in the top of the sixth. Ty Kelly came to the plate to pinch-hit for Pivetta. He ended up on second base after a throwing error by Cabrera. Cesar Hernandez doubled for his third hit of the day to left field to score Kelly. Hernandez moved up to third on a fly out to deep right by Freddy Galvis. Center fielder Nick Williams homered to right-center field to make it a 6-3 ballgame. After a fly out by Rhys Hoskins, right fielder Hyun Soo Kim walked. Unfortunately, Tommy Joseph struck out to end the frame.
With the game being shortened by rain, it was a case of the Phils offense perking up too little, too late. It's unclear if they would have made a comeback if the game had been a normal nine innings.
