Phillies end losing streak, split series with Red Sox

BOSTON, Ma. — Coming into tonight's game, the Philadelphia Phillies (59-48) were hoping to both end their four game losing streak and split this short two game series against the Boston Red Sox (75-34). The Phils were able to do just that. Starter Jake Arrieta was fantastic against a very potent Red Sox line-up. Over seven innings, the righty allowed one run on six hits and struck out seven. It was the first start in ten outings and only the second outing this season in which Arrieta did not allow any walks. His command played a big role in his success and his turnaround this month after a horrendous month of June. Tommy Hunter threw an eight-pitch eighth inning. It marked the first time this season in which Hunter has thrown a 1-2-3 inning with a one run lead. The Phillies need him to continue to rebound if they want to contend. Seranthony Dominguez appeared to get in his head a bit in the ninth inning, but he was able to get past his struggles to notch his 11th save.

While the Phillies were an abysmal 1-8 with runners in scoring position tonight, the bats did manage to plate enough runs to win the ballgame. Roman Quinn got three hits, including a double. Carlos Santana and Maikel Franco got two hits apiece. Franco actually reached base four times, thanks to two walks in addition to the two aforementioned hits. Rhys Hoskins hit his third double of the series and scored a run. It was a combined effort, which is good to see from this often-struggling offense.

The Phillies got on the board first in tonight's game. With one out in the top of the second, Maikel Franco walked. After a popout by Roman Quinn, catcher Jorge Alfaro doubled to center field. Franco scored without a throw to give the Phils a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, Scott Kingery struck out to end the inning and Alfaro was stranded at second base.

The Phils extended their lead in the fourth. With one out, Franco walked. Quinn followed with a double to left field to put runners on second and third for Alfaro. He was hit by a pitch on the hand to load the bases. The Phillies' athletic trainer and manager Gabe Kapler both came out to look at the injured hand, and Alfaro ultimately opted to remain in the ballgame. This brought Kingery to the plate with the bases loaded and only one out. He hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr.'s throw home was off line, and Franco was able to avoid a tag to make it a 2-0 ballgame. Cesar Hernandez was retired on a flyout for the final out.

The Red Sox got one back in their half of the sixth inning. Blake Swihart led off the inning with a single. One out later, J.D. Martinez doubled off the Green Monster. This put runners on second and third with one out. Xander Bogaerts grounded out to third base for the second out, but Swihart scored on the play. Martinez also moved up to third. Fortunately, new Red Sox acquisition Ian Kinsler lined out to right to end the inning with the Phils' lead in tact.

The Phillies added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Rhys Hoskins led off the inning with a double to center. Carlos Santana followed with a single to center that was deflected by Bogaerts at shortstop, allowing Hoskins to score. After a line-out by Asdrubal Cabrera, right fielder Nick Williams grounded into a force out, in which Santana was retired at second for the second out of the inning. Franco followed with his second single of the game to put runners on first and second with two outs for Quinn. He grounded out to end the inning, but it ended up not mattering, as the Phillies were able to secure the victory.
