It is one thing that Philadelphia fans pelted a drunk guy in a Santa suit with snowballs. That's a tired cliche, but it has given Philadelphia fans a bad name. But Saturday, a Phillies fan attempted to assault first baseman Ryan Howard with a beer bottle by throwing it at him after Howard grounded out to end the ninth inning Saturday.
Philly.com's Matt Breen reported the event, getting Howard's reaction to it:
Ryan Howard’s difficult season took an ugly turn on Saturday afternoon when a fan threw a beer bottle at the Phillies first baseman following the team’s 6-3 loss to Milwaukee.
The bottle landed near Howard’s feet as he walked back to the dugout.Howard alerted a security guard at Citizens Bank Park, who picked up the green aluminum Bud Light Lime bottle. It was tasteless, Howard said.
“I’ve done too much in this town to have that kind of stuff,” Howard said. “If you want to yell out ‘You suck,’ that’s whatever. But when you start throwing stuff, that’s when stuff gets personal.”
A Phillies spokeswoman said the team is investigating the incident.
Phillies fan Bryan Tracy snapped a few pictures of the offender. Thanks to that picture, multiple people responded to our post with a name. We passed the name along to the Phillies.
It is one thing to criticize Howard's play – and Howard has not performed well in 2016 – but attempting to assault Howard is just plain despicable.
