Jorge Alfaro remains one of the top 100 MLB prospects (Frank Klose/Sports Talk Philly)
When MLB Pipeline listed their top prospects, just three Phillies were listed, down from seven the year before. Baseball America, a very respected organization on prospects, released their Top 100 prospect list last night. In this rankings list, three Phillies were featured on the list from MLB, but a fourth made the cut.
The Phillies on the Baseball America Top 100 list are:
12 - J.P. Crawford
17 – Mickey Moniak
41 – Jorge Alfaro
80 – Sixto Sanchez
Four Phillies featured on the list in 2016 dropped off the list: Nick Williams (27), Jake Thompson (75), Cornelius Randolph (88), and Andrew Knapp (96). Crawford dropped from number 6 on the list.
The other names on the list are new. Moniak, of course, was the Phillies first overall pick just last summer. Alfaro was on the 2015 list at 76 while still a member of the Texas Rangers before injuries bumped him off the list for 2016. But the name on here that might get the attention of fans is Sanchez.
Sanchez makes the cut after Baseball America listed him as the fourth-best Phillies prospect in their December rankings, so it is not totally a surprise he is on this list. Sanchez has only played rookie ball to this point. An international signing out of the Dominican Republic, many feel that Sanchez has a high ceiling as a starting pitcher. Sanchez is just 18 years old, so he may be headed for Short Season Williamsport, if not starting the season in the Rookie League once again.
Pitchers and catchers are due to report on Monday.
