The Phillies made what is expected to be one of their final signings this off-season before catchers and pitchers report on Feb. 14th and the full squad reports on Feb. 17th.
Avoiding a potential arbitration hearing, Cesar Hernandez and the Phillies agreed to a $2.55 million contract for the 2017 season. Earlier in the off-season, the Phillies had filed for $2 million while Hernandez filed for $2.8 million.

Hernandez put together a solid 2016 season, making him the expected Opening Day second basemen. In his age 26 season, Hernandez slashed .294/.371/.393 while also leading the MLB in triples. He also drew 66 walks, showing a patient eye, and was second on the team with 161 hits last season.
Cause for concern for Hernandez, however, includes the lingering promise of the organization's top prospect J.P. Crawford. He figures to be promoted sometime during the upcoming season, thus complicating the second base position for Freddy Galvis and Hernandez.
The weakest part of Hernandez's game as of late has been his base running and mental mistakes. He was caught stealing 13 times last season, the second highest in the National League. In comparison, he only successfully stole 17 bases.
