Jonathan Pettibone got the starting the nod as the 22
year old made his major league debut. Pettibone was solid in his first start,
throwing five and one-third innings while allowing two earned runs, which both
were solo home runs and recording six strikeouts.
Pettibone allowed a solo home run to Pedro Alvarez in the
second and a solo homer to Russell Martin in the fifth, but otherwise stayed
out of trouble. Starling Marte hit a leadoff double in the first, but did not
score. Clint Barmes also reached second with one out in the fifth, but couldn't
score.
The Phillies offense managed to mustered out just enough
runs. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Phillies tied things up
when Pettibone scored on a wild pitch from third base. The Phillies took
the lead in the fourth when Jimmy Rollins was hit by a pitch to bring home the
go-ahead run.
Raul Valdes took over after Pettibone was taken out of
the game, he did not allowed a run to score. Antonio Bastardo and Mike
Adams both threw scoreless innings. Jonathan Papelbon saved the ballgame as the
Phillies never looked back winning 3-2. Pettibone gets a no decision, however,
Valdez gets the win.
The Phillies will be back tomorrow against the
Pirates with Cole Hamels hitting the mound
