The final full week prior to the non-waiver trade deadline has arrived, and the Philadelphia Phillies are poised to make at least “one or two moves,” according to The Athletic’s Jayson Stark, as the club seeks its first postseason berth in seven seasons.
“I don’t think you’ll see the Phillies make a gigantic move, … but I do think they’ll make one or two moves between now and next week just to add to depth, add to the mix, add to the bench, add to the bullpen, add to the versatility,” Stark said Monday morning on 97.5 The Fanatic. “They could wind up with one bat. They could wind up with two bats.”
Stark’s colleague, Ken Rosenthal, linked Monday morning four “bats” the Phillies are currently rumored to be targeting: Curtis Granderson, Asdrubal Cabrera, Derek Dietrich, and “possibly Eduardo Escobar in more of an everyday role.” ESPN’s Buster Olney first linked the Phillies to showing interest in Cabrera on Sunday.

“It could be a right-handed-hitting outfielder you could plug in there with Nick Williams. It could be a versatility guy, a guy who can play the left side of the infield, … [like] Escobar of the Twins … who has played shortstop, [but] you’d rather not play him much at shortstop,” Stark said. “He was leading the league in extra-base hits for quite awhile this year. That’s a definite possibility.”
The Phillies are clearly looking to improve their bench, which is batting a National League sixth-worst .220 in 148 pinch-hit appearances. Following Sunday’s doubleheader against the San Diego Padres, the club demoted outfielder Aaron Altherr to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Altherr is slashing just .171/.290/.305 this season with six home runs and 33 RBI in 248 plate appearances.
Whomever the Phillies do acquire over the next week or so, no such player would have been as perfect of a fit as Los Angeles Dodgers SS/3B Manny Machado. Stark said the Phillies were “in it to the end” on Machado, given he is “exactly what they would love to add, and there’s nobody else like that.”

“If they’re looking for somebody that plays shortstop, or can play shortstop who offers you offense, that guy just doesn’t exist on this market. That complicates things,” Stark said.
Beyond the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, the Phillies could still look to add through the waiver wire in August.
“There’s going to be some guys available next week and even in August. I thought a little bit about say like an Adam Duvall,” Stark said. “Pat Gillick always had a knack for finding that guy, that Matt Stairs kind of guy.”
“It will be interesting to see what Matt Klentak can fish out of those waters.”
