Phillies Hot Stove: Club Interested in Mets Closer Familia

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

It appears the Phillies and general manager Matt Klentak have a "Plan B," in case trade discussions with the Baltimore Orioles regarding shortstop Manny Machado and closer Zach Britton fall by the wayside.

The club — along with the San Francisco Giants — is reportedly interested in acquiring seven-year veteran New York Mets closer RHP Jeurys Familia, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

Familia, 28, is 4-4 with a 2.88 ERA, 1.230 WHIP and 17 saves in 21 opportunities this season with the Mets. The 2016 National League All-Star led all of baseball in games finished in 2015 (65) and 2016 (67), as well as posted a MLB-best 51 saves in 2016.

The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, native was limited to 26 games last season, undergoing surgery in mid-May to remove an arterial blood clot near his right shoulder. Familia is 13-17 with a 2.66 ERA in 313 career games, and is set to enter free agency in the offseason after earning $7.93 million this season.
