The Philadelphia Phillies have made their first move of Major League Baseball’s Hot Stove season. No, not Juan Soto. The highly coveted free agent slugger signed a record-breaking 15-year deal with the rival New York Mets on Sunday night. Instead, the Fightins focused on the bullpen adding former American League All-Star Jordan Romano to a one-year deal.

The 31-year-old right-hander spent all six years of Major League service with the Toronto Blue Jays. A 10th round draft pick in the 2014 MLB Draft, Romano was lights out for Toronto from 2020-2023 compiling 97 saves and two All-Star appearances (2022 & 2023) over a four-season period. The Markham, Ontario native’s career hit a roadblock last season when he was unable to recover from July arthroscopic elbow surgery. He was non-tendered by the Blue Jays after the season, making him a free agent.

A high leverage option out of the ‘pen, Romano passed his physical with the Phillies and will join a group that includes Jose Alverado, Tanner Banks, Orion Kerkering, Jose Ruiz, and Matt Strahm. The deal is worth $8.5 million.
