Phillies’ Lively set for 3rd career start against Price, Red Sox

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

BOSTON — Rookie RHP Ben Lively and the Philadelphia Phillies (21-41) will look to snap their six-game losing skid in the two-game series finale against the Boston Red Sox (35-28) and southpaw David Price Tuesday evening at Fenway Park.

The Phillies fell 6-5 to the Red Sox in 11 innings during Monday's series opener. Right-handed starter Jerad Eickhoff tossed six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, two walks, six strikeouts and 98 pitches. Eickhoff failed to earn his first win of the season, blowing a 4-0 lead that was provided to him with the Phillies' four-run first against reigning American League Cy Young Award winner RHP Rick Porcello. Former Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava and second baseman Howie Kendrick each delivered three hits, while first baseman Tommy Joseph lead the way in the RBI column with two.

Tuesday's series finale concludes the Phillies' current stretch of 20 of their last 30 games on the road. They will face the Red Sox the next two days at Citizens Bank Park in the continuation of the home-and-home set, but without second baseman Cesar Hernandez, as the Phillies have announced he will miss at least six weeks with an oblique strain.

Starting Pitching Matchup:

RHP Ben Lively LHP David Price
(1-1, 2.57 ERA) (1-1, 5.29 ERA)

Lively Career vs. BOS: N/A

Lively, 25, has thrown seven innings in each of his first two Major League starts, June 3 home against the San Francisco Giants and June 8 away against the Atlanta Braves. The last Phillies starter to accomplish such feat was RHP Carlton Loewer in 1998.

The right-hander will look to become just the seventh Phillies pitcher since 1913 to start their career with three straight starts of at least seven innings and three runs allowed or fewer.

Price Career vs. PHI: 1-1, 4.76 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 11 1/3 IP, 11 H, 11 R, 6 ER, 3 HR, 5 BB, 10 SO, 1.412 WHIP

Price, 31, returns for his fourth start and home season debut after missing nearly the first two months of the season — and all of spring training — with left elbow soreness. The southpaw is coming off of a losing decision away against the New York Yankees on June 8, allowing six runs on eight hits, four walks and two home runs in just five innings of work.

The five-time All-Star last faced the Phillies the year he won the American League Cy Young Award, 2012. Overall, Price 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA, 1.412 WHIP and 10/5 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 11 1/3 innings.
