Yesterday, the Phillies (67-79) finished a four game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates (77-69) taking the loss. In the series, the Phillies went one and three. In yesterday’s loss, the Phillies lost 4-1, only scoring a run the ninth inning when Carlos Ruiz drove in Marlon Byrd. A.J. Burnett (8-16 4.34 ERA) went only six innings, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks. He also stuck out seven batters. Tonight, the Phillies will send their ace to the hill against NL East rival, Miami Marlins (71-74). Cole Hamels’ (8-7 2.56 ERA) record may not show it, but he is have a fantastic year, including being part of combined NO-NO, and is a dark horse candidate for NL Cy Young Award. Hamels in his last start did take the loss versus the Washington Nationals going six and a third innings, striking out seven batters. The Marlins will oppose Hamels with Henderson Alvarez (10-6 2.88 ERA). Alvarez is coming off a start only going two and third innings in which he was pulled with a strained oblique. Game Notes: The Marlins will be without Giancarlo Stanton who was drilled in the face by Brewers’ pitcher, Mike Fiers. Stanton luckily only suffered facial lacerations and dental damage.
