The Phillies made some roster cuts this morning as they optioned Mike Stutes (0-1, 21.00 ERA) and Luis Garcia (0-1, 13.50 ERA) to the minors as well as reassigning others. Along with Stutes and Garcia, the Phillies assigned outfielders Aaron Altherr, Kelly Dugan, Leandro Castro and catcher Sebastian Valle to minors.
Mike Stutes had struggled in his outings this spring, allowing seven earned runs in three innings. Although he has made the team before, the 27-year-old had an unlikely shot this year with Antonio Bastardo and Jake Diekman in the way. With his velocity down and his command an issue, the Phillies sought to option him to let him develop and improve more.
The Phillies are sure to make some more roster moves in the upcoming week and with Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez's struggles so far, it wouldn't be a shocker to see him optioned soon. It will surely be interesting (and suprising) to see who will be cut next.
