PHILADELPHIA — Thanks to the combined performance of seven relievers — right-handers Andrew Bailey, Jeanmar Gomez, David HernandezDalier Hinojosa, Colton Murray, Hector Neris and left-hander Elvis Araujo — the Philadelphia Phillies were named "Bullpen of the Week" for April 25-May 1 on Monday.

Each week as part of the MLB Prevailing Moments program, a bullpen staff is selected to receive the honor based on a metric used to measure team-bullpen performance called "Bullpen Rating System." It was created by "an industry-wide panel of MLB experts," including statistician and sabermetrics founder Bill James.

The rating system scores bullpen performance for each appearance as follows, according to MLB.com:

• Add 1.5 points for each out recorded
• Add 1.5 points for each strikeout
• Add 5 points for a save
• Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed
• Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed
• Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed
• Subtract 1 point for each walk
• Subtract 5 points for a blown save

The Phillies bullpen earned a total of 114 points, allowing just 10 hits, one earned run and seven walks over 19 innings of relief. They struck out 23 batters and combined for a 0.47 ERA, 0.895 WHIP, three wins and five saves — four of which were by Gomez.

Hernandez came away with the best performance of the week — 15 points — with his two-inning, four-strikeout outing in the series opener against the Cleveland Indians on Friday in which he did not allow a run.

The Phillies benefited from their bullpen's success, as they secured back-to-back series sweeps — and six consecutive victories overall — against the Washington Nationals and Indians.

Their 114 point total was the highest for any relief staff this season, besting the recipients of the award from the first three weeks: Oakland A's (103), Minnesota Twins (90) and Nationals (112.5). The Detroit Tigers staff was the only other club to reach triple digits in points this week, trailing the Phillies by 11.5 (102.5).
