The starting pitching matchup is set for the Philadelphia Phillies' 2019 season opener against the Atlanta Braves, Thursday, March 28, at Citizens Bank Park.
As announced on March 8, Phillies ace RHP Aaron Nola will receive the starting nod from second-year manager Gabe Kapler. Just who Nola would oppose, however, was not confirmed, until 10 days later, Monday, by Braves fourth-year manager Brian Snitker— RHP Julio Teheran.
Teheran, 28, has started each of the last five season openers for the Braves since 2014; in 2018, he opposed Nola, allowing four runs on as many hits, three walks and three strikeouts spanning 5 2/3 innings and 90 pitches. Nola, meanwhile, allowed just one run on three hits, one walk and three strikeouts through 5 1/3 innings and 68 pitches. Both pitchers received no-decisions in the Braves' 8-5 victory.
Teheran's sixth consecutive Opening Day start in 2019 will tie with Hall of Famer Warren Spahn for the Braves' modern-day record, notes FOX Sports. Had expected Braves Opening Day starter RHP Mike Foltynewicz (elbow) not been injured, Teheran's streak would not have reached such mark.
Current Phillies, even non-roster invitees, have fared well in their careers opposite Teheran. Bryce Harper — who homered in five straight Opening Days from 2013 to 2017 — is 18-40 lifetime against the right-hander with three doubles, eight home runs, 19 RBI, 11 walks and just five strikeouts.
The Phillies have just seven spring training games remaining until they had north to Philadelphia. On Tuesday, they will oppose the Houston Astros at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida.
