The start of the work week was a busy one for news related to the Philadelphia Phillies, ahead of their three-game series opener Monday evening opposite the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citizens Bank Park.

Bruce Named NL Player of the Week

After slugging two doubles, four home runs, 11 RBI, and slashing .381/.381/1.048 in his first six games as a Phillie, recently acquired outfielder Jay Bruce earned top National League honors on Monday in being named Player of the Week.

Bruce is the first Phillies player to earn such honor since Cole Hamels in 2015, and the first to earn the award in his first week with the team since Paul Byrd in 1998. This is Bruce's sixth Player of the Week award in his career, and his first since 2012 while a member of the Cincinnati Reds.

Dominguez Seeks 2nd Opinion

Right-hander Seranthony Dominguez — placed on the 10-day injured list since June 7 with ulnar collateral ligament damage in his right elbow — will seek a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, fearing Tommy John surgery is necessary.

Dominguez told reporters, “Honestly, I’m hoping for a miracle.”

Quinn, Ramos on the Mend

OF Roman Quinn — out since April 24 with a right groin strain — and RHP Edubray Ramos — out since May 10 with right shoulder stiffness — will begin their rehab assignments Monday evening with the Advanced-A Clearwater, according to KYW's Dave Uram.

Phillies Deal Prospect from Giles Trade

The Phillies dealt 24-year-old right-handed prospect Tom Eshelman to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for international slot money; Eshelman has been assigned to Triple-A Norfolk.

Eshelman — a 2017 Paul Owens Award recipient as Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Year — was acquired in the December 2015 Ken Giles trade with the Houston Astros; the Phillies' only remaining player of the five they received for Giles is RHP Vince Velasquez.

This season between Double- and Triple-A with the Phillies, Eshelman went a combined 1-4 with a 4.61 ERA, 1.409 WHIP and 49-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio spanning 10 starts and 54 2/3 innings.

Kapler on 'Big Papi'

Late Sunday, the since-retired Boston Red Sox 10-time All-Star, three-time World Series champion and seven-time Silver Slugger Ward winner — DH David Ortiz — was shot at a bar in the Dominican Republic.

Phillies Manager Gabe Kapler said hearing the news about his former minor- and major-league teammate David Ortiz — who he has known since 1997 — was "pretty painful," adding:

Ortiz underwent surgery for six hours overnight, and will be transferred in an air ambulance to a Boston hospital Monday evening. Ortiz reportedly suffered damage to his intestines, colon, gallbladder, and liver, as the bullet passed through his lower back and abdomen; doctors Ortiz to make a full recovery.
